Nine Tips for Easy Clutter Clearing

By Ginni Stiles, Professional Organizer

1. Decide why you are clearing clutter. Are you making room for new business, friends, or romance? Is your clutter keeping you from doing something you really want to do? Keep your eyes on the goal.

2. Pick some favorite charities for giving books, clothes, toys, etc. Picture the person’s delight at getting your old stuff. It helps you let go.

3. Start with areas you use every day: the front door, the top of your desk, the kitchen. You’ll enjoy the results and build momentum to tackle bigger projects like the basement or attic.

4. Set a timer or put on a favorite CD and only work until the time is up. This will keep you from feeling overwhelmed.
5. Make piles/bags/boxes and label them: Keep, Sell, Give Away, Trash.

6. Pick up only one item at a time and touch each item only once. Make a decision and move on. If you can’t decide what to do, put it in a maybe pile and leave it for another day. Don’t waste time deliberating.
7. Once you have cleared a space, don’t re-clutter it. If you have to “dump” stuff, do it on top of other clutter.

8. Really need motivation? Plan a party or invite houseguests (leave yourself ample time). Now you have to clean up!

9. Hire a professional organizer. We can give you a personalized plan after a one-time consultation, which may be all you need to get on track. Or we can work with you periodically as needed. Some people benefit from weekly visits for phenomenal results!
