Can Feng Shui Really Balance your Life?
This past year has been the most humbling and difficult year of my life. I have never felt more overwhelmed, or discouraged. I threw so many balls (commitments, projects and proposals) into the air that I was ultimately unable to keep up. As they all started to crash, so did my self-confidence and energy.
In December my friend, Larry (Feng Shui Lighting) invited me to an evening at Landmark Forum, an organization committed to self awareness and empowerment. One of our exercises was to describe our current life vs. how we would like it to be. At the time I remember writing: overwhelmed, anxious, and exhausted. I want my life to be balanced! Larry glanced at my notes and looked at me. Puzzled, he smiled and said, “But that’s what you do; you’re a feng shui practitioner, right?” Honestly, at the moment I didn’t feel like much of a feng shui practitioner at all.
This year has deepened my appreciation for how truly difficult, yet so important it is to balance the many aspects of our life -from relationships and dreams to work and commitments, plus of course, family and health. When we learn to ride a bike we realize quickly how easy we can fall either to the right or left. In life, attaining balance is more like riding a unicycle…in a canoe. Life balance is a multi-directional, multi-dimensional challenge that many of us struggle with versus enjoy.
I have learned so much from so many of you through consultations, presentations and your feedback. With a little distance and reflection, I realized that I do believe in feng shui. Like many of you, something about feng shui resonates and inspires me. Ultimately, I believe the philosophy/practice of feng shui offers valuable insights on how to create a happier, more balanced life. I would like to explore these insights (and new ones) together with you.
The Ba-Gua is an intriguing symbol/mandala that holds many secrets. My appreciation for this symbol continues to grow. The Ba-Gua represents both the eight facets of life that can form the foundation of an incredibly balanced and successful life. At same time the Ba-Gua represents the eight primary ways our lives can fall out of balance.
I intend to develop my website to be primarily a forum/resource for this discussion on balance with my newsletter serving as a periodic summary of great points and resources shared by you and I. My next newsletter will provide an overview on the Ba-Gua and an article on Helpful People/Travel. In the meantime, I welcome your thoughts, questions, and comments regarding these topics.
Wishing you all the best,
H.G. Chissell

I believe this day & age will keep accelerating, and if we can’t seem to find “the balance”, we will burn out.
Thanks for the reminder, espec. at Holiday times!

This summer I attended a Mindfulness workshop. My instructor, who had been teaching and practicing mindfulness for over 9 years shared an experience he had in his personal life. He had suffered a heartattack and needed by pass surgery. It was devastating for him, however it was practicing mindfulness that helped him to get through the ordeal. Overwhelming stress and unbalance created havac in my life. The Mindful Stress Reduction program was helpful in establishing a balance and create fully conscience living. Without the weekly class however, the challenge is all to mine to maintain balance. I appreciate your article and look foward to future correspondences.

I want to thank you for the Feng Shui consults you did with me and my wife. The paint colors you assisted us in selecting for our home (and garage) have fostered harmony and prosperity. The suggestions regarding arrangement of furniture that we have taken have altered the flow in our home and seem to cultivate a sense of ease of movement. The collective impact has been Balance and Good Chi. Guests to our home often respond to the overall aestetic with a wow reaction and comment that the house looks AND feels really good.
And, I’ve learned something about Feng Shui from you that I apply to my life to help me return to Balance when life deals a tug this way or that way. Finally and most importantly is Your Affect. You consult with a focus on “The Other” and assisting people in creating a space that produces harmony and supports them in their life’s intentions.
You are a positive force of nature.
